Snowed in? How do you keep your staff working?

    December 18th, 2009

Well, snow is falling over the UK with many places experiencing extremesnow_jamcam_203x152drifts blocking roads and forcing people to stay at home.

So how will you keep your staff working as they sit at home, snowed in?

Here are a few ideas that you could implement to keep your turnover, turning over!

    • IP phones - link your home workers into your main telephone system by using IP handsets.
    • The correct mobile phone tariff - get a tariff that allows your workers to make free calls to all UK standard landlines
    • Desktop video conferencing - have face to face calls with your staff for free over the internet

These are just a few ideas to keep your company running. If you have used anything that works really well for you please do let us know…..

O2 building more masts for their network

    December 9th, 2009

O2 are building more and more masts to help boost their network coverageo2-logo1 and capacity.

With the rapid growth of smart phones and 3G dongles, the capacity of all networks has been put under pressure. Therefore with O2 being the fastest growing and largest network of last year they need to do something to make sure that they carry on in that vain.

So they are spending millions and millions of pounds on developing their network to provide more capacity and a better service to its millions of customers.

Will this see a push from the other networks to boost their capacity and improve their service? If the current customer service from some networks is anything to go with, I doubt it.

These large networks have got so big now that customer service is a long way down their list of things to improve and since we all now have mobiles, they know we aren’t going anywhere, but something must be done otherwise we are going to be pushed around by more and more big corporations, forcing us into a large nanny state without any identity.

We’ll be American before we know it!

    UK’s 3G Network in trouble?

    December 2nd, 2009

With the iPhone likely to be one of this Christmas’ big sellers especially as it is3g now available on Orange and O2, the UK’s 3G network could be in trouble.

Apple’s iPhone as well as many other smartphones and dongle’s all use the Third Generation (3G) network to get quick internet browsing, to watch TV on their mobiles and surf the web.

Now this is a great thing, however these devices are seriously hungry when it comes to browsing. According to O2, watching something on YouTube from your mobile uses the equivalent of 500,000 texts message simultaneously!

Therefore it really isn’t any surprise that with the huge growth of smartphones and dongle use, the UK’s 3G network is reaching breaking point.

For the UK the lack of bandwidth and network speed has again come under fire. We are one of the only countries in The Developed World with slow, rubbish, outdated network infrastructures and speeds.

I live in the countryside and for me to get even 2MB on my broadband is a miracle let alone the supposed up to 20MB that are promised.

Surely as a nation that is trying to forge itself as a competitive Country we should be investing in decent infrastructure and our home grown companies rather than spending millions of pounds on health and safety rubbish and bureaucratic nonsense?

New Blackberry Pearl in the pipeline

    November 27th, 2009

Details of a new Blackberry Pearl seemed to have been leaked. blackberry-pearl-9100-1

The device will be the latest in the Blackberry Pearl series and is likely to suceed the Pearl 8100/8110 and 8210.

So far it seems to be known as the Blackberry Pearl 9100 but has apparently been code named the Stratus or Striker.

The keypad seems to be a bit larger than the old Pearls and it has lost its roller ball in favour of the pad, just like the Blackberry 8520, according to the CrackBerry website.

They also think that there is a camera with LED flash, but we will wait and see when it is officially launched.

Prepare yourself for the New Year now!

    November 27th, 2009

With December being just round the corner, many businesses seem to usenew-year1the festive season as an excuse to put things off until the New Year. This could be the perfect opportunity to take advantage of this and get one step ahead of your competitors.

With things always seeming to slow down a bit coming up to Christmas, why not use the extra time to have a good look at your communications.

Does your phone system need upgrading? If so why not get it done during your quieter period so that it is up and running for when you return for the New Year?

Do you need a tariff review on your mobiles?

Do you want someone to have a look at your calls and lines to make sure that you are paying what you should be and no more?

Or why not simply take advantage of the fact that VAT is going back up to 17.5% in January so you could save yourself 2% on VAT simply by purchasing what you need before the New Year.

Sync your calender & contacts with your mobile with Google

    November 26th, 2009

With the advent of Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES) for companies,google-sync-serviceallowing complete control over their synchronisation of their desktop computers, what is there for the smaller business and the sole traders?

BES is relatively expensive for single workers but an absolute bargain for larger companies, however with the growth of Open Source help from Google the one man bands can now sync their calender and contacts with their mobiles for free.

With Google Mobile Sync, as long as you have a mobile that allows you to get online, you can simply sync your Google calender and your contacts and tasks with your mobile phone whenever you like.

One of the major benefits is that you will have all of your contacts available to you wherever you are in the World as long as you have internet access.

You will never miss another meeting again with their handy calender sync function and best of all, this is available free!

It is no substitute for Blackberry’s services for a larger company but if you are a one man band it is definitely worth looking at.

    WiFi on aeroplanes?

    November 23rd, 2009

A number of airlines have now introduced Wi-Fi on their planes so you canwi-fi-airplane-200801-ss download and respond to your emails whilst flying.

Is this simply a big push to get business  travellers back in the air, or to bring consumers back to travel during these hard times or is it really a true incentive to improve business travel?

More importantly, does it actually work? There are a number of stories bouncing around the internet that a lot of people have booked with an airline simply to use this facility only to find out that the airline only has the service on a couple of their planes! Not that much use if your plane isn’t one of them!!

What are the security implications too? Will it make things more easy for criminals to control their networks? Will the Wi-Fi effect the planes controls?

Are we again taking communication too far? Will companies now expect you to work even when you are flying?

Is this a step in the right direction or is it step too far?
